Mental retardation is a generalized disorder normally appearing before adulthood. Its characterized by impaired functioning and deficits in adaptive behaviors. The definition includes both a component related to mental functioning and related to an individuals functioning skills inside their environment.
This is basically a learning disorder. If it is very serious, the person will be very delayed in learning development. They will have problems solving problems and difficulty relating to other people. This all depends on the level of mental retardation.
Signs and/or Symptoms:
Signs that a person might have mental retardation are if they have difficulty learning or even difficulty socializing. They might not talk a lot or they might get frustrated easily and if this happens, it will keep continuing if you don't get them help.
There are different levels of mental retardation, some being more serious than others. Some people can function fine with it but others can't walk or talk.
All signs are behavioral. You will notice that the person will not act properly and they will have delays in social skills and social skills. They also might get frustrated with them selves or others very easily. In some cases they might know they are different and that will frustrate them.
They also might not behave correctly around other people and maybe even not be outgoing.
Stages of Mental Retardation:
Profound mental retardation is when the IQ is less than 20.
severe mental retardation is when the IQ is between 20 and 35
Moderate mental retardation is when the IQ is between 35 and 55
Mild mental retardation is when the IQ is from 55 to 70
